Why Can’t I Have My Cake & Eat It Too? When The Hell Will I Ever Be Able To Eat Cake?!?

by Veronica on June 10, 2010

I don’t know who thought this expression was brilliant, or why it ever caught on, but it has got to be one of the stupidest things I’ve ever heard.  In any situation, no matter what you are relating this to, IT IS NOT APPLICABLE! (yes, totally screaming this)

The real meaning behind this expression varies from person to person but no matter what point you are trying to make, this phrase is still ridiculous.  Saying this to someone leads them to believe that you can’t always get what you want.  This is a very big misconception.  You think I’m crazy?  Maybe so.  I’ve been told I portray bits of lunacy many times.  But regardless of the state of my current mental health, I refuse to believe that if you really want something, you can’t have it.

Why am I going off on a tangent about this?

I freakin’ love cake!!  Literally and figuratively.

Figuratively speaking, I believe that when you really want something, you should never give up working towards obtaining it.  There have been so many times in my life when someone has told me that I have “unrealistic expectations” and I should give up on pursing certain things that I wanted or desired because it was impractical.  But I’m a brat.  I fully admit that.  If I want something, I will not accept the idea that I will not get it.  I might not get what I want exactly when I want it…but I’ll eventually get it.  I have a very strong opinion that as long as you’re not negatively affecting other people on your journey for what you want, you should continue going for it until you get it.  This applies to everyone!

Career professionals, job seekers, new college graduates…
If you want a job and can’t get one right now, it doesn’t mean you’re never going to get a job!  If you want to change careers and people tell you that you can’t do it because you don’t have the experience, don’t give in to that!  It’s easy to get discouraged when people are constantly telling you that you can’t do something.  But why take the easy way out?  What do you have to lose by but readjusting your thought process?  You’re already frustrated, stressed out, unhappy, depressed, discouraged, hopeless…etc.  You’re tired of hearing the word “no” but no matter what any of us do in life, that word exists and will continue to come up on a daily basis. What do you have to lose by continuing to pursue what you want?

People ask me all the time how I stay so motivated.  It’s not because I’m any more exceptional than anyone else.  The honest truth is that I am a huge brat.  I have always had to have my way in every situation.  If someone tells me “no”, that will motivate me to prove them wrong.  The more I hear discouragement, the harder I will work to get a “yes”.  This is my motivation, getting what I want because I want it.  Believe me, I am one of the laziest people on the planet.  I just told someone today that I’m too lazy to walk up the stairs…  But it’s really because I don’t want to.  Now if someone actually told me that I can’t walk up the stairs…
I think you get the point.

The moral of this story is that success is really all up to you.  Each of us make decisions all on our own on how we react to things in life.  If you really want something, never give up until you get it.  Readjust your attitude and thought process.  It’s very possible to do…if you really want to do it.

And if you’re thinking, “it’s easier said than done”, guess what? That is the second stupidest expression I’ve ever heard!!  Of course it’s easier said than done.  Everything is.  That’s why it’s called work.

If you want to have cake and eat it too, you can.

Eat your freakin’ cake and when it’s gone, go get some more!

Why aren’t you eating cake?

It’s difficult for most people to have the determination that you speak of. Everyone is different so how do you expect others to find the same kinds of motivation that you have?

@Wondering
Thank you for reading and your question. It is difficult to have the determination to keep moving forward. Especially when you’re frustrated from falling down. And you’re right in the point you’re making that we all find motivation in different ways. It’s important to spend time getting to know yourself. What makes you happy? What do you enjoy in life? These are usually motivating factors for people. Get to know the “thing” that will force you to get up in the morning and once you find it…go for it.
