Hideous Interview Attire: Socks

by Veronica on July 29, 2010

Welcome to my Hideous Interview Attire series.
After years of interviewing all levels of professionals and countless discussions on what to wear for an interview, I’ve been inspired to share my experiences.

I am not making this stuff up…no matter how ridiculous some of these pictures are. Some people really just don’t know any better…

Today I want to focus on men’s socks. Why am I starting off this series with socks? Believe it or not, it is one of the most common fashion mishaps I’ve seen. I have to assume that many people are thinking, “who will be looking at my socks?” Well, in these situations, I can’t help but look at your socks. They are screaming at me.

I’m aware that these are a bit of an exaggeration. The point is, pay attention to your socks! Make sure they are clean, the same color, and remember that the more boring they are, the less likely I am to notice them. Stay away from patterns and bright colors. Black, navy and brown are always safe choices. Just make sure they match the rest of your attire!

Veronica, great post, I couldn’t agree more. About 6 months ago a client who is an executive with a major employer in town asked me to lift up my pants to show him my socks. I was taken back at the request but I obliged and he was impressed that I matched my socks with the rest of my suit. Needless to say you never know what will disqualify you from a job or from a prospect becoming a client!

@Matt Jones – Wow! I’ve never actually asked to look at someone’s socks before! I’d honestly prefer not to notice someone’s socks at all…very interesting. Good thing you pay attention to what you’re wearing Matt! :-)
