Football movies. I love them! Remember The Titans is in my top 10 favorite movies of all time. I can watch Jerry Macguire over and over again despite my strong dislike for Tom Cruise. And when I saw The Blind Side, I decided that I needed to create a list of awesome football movies in general. …these are the kind of things I do when I’m bored.
Those kind of feel-good movies that inspire overcoming hardship, self discovery and following dreams may seem unrealistic to a lot of people. The irony here is that I cannot think of a football movie I’ve seen that wasn’t realistic or based on a true story. And in almost every football movie, there is a recruiter scouting talent. (see where I’m going with this?)
Recruiting out of the crowd is something that happens in everyday life. I do it all the time. In fact, as I’m writing this, I’m sitting in a coffee shop, listening to a guy talk on the phone about work. I’m trying to figure out what he does for a living, how he conducts business, how he communicates and if I may have opportunities for him. (he just dropped an f-bomb on a business call so I’m not so excited about him as a candidate anymore) I feel like I’m “big brother”. I’m always watching, listening and yes, judging.
Most recruiters or hiring managers are always scouting for good talent. And now, more than ever, is the time when we are recruiting out of the crowd the most! The market is over-saturated with job seekers. Employed job seekers as well as unemployed and underemployed. Almost everyone is looking, applying and inquiring. Because of this, we are overwhelmed with resumes, cover letters and phone calls from applicants. Recruiting out of the crowd saves time, energy and resources…all of which are scarce in our current economic situation.
What’s my point?
Well, the point of this story is, be aware of yourself no matter where you are. Conduct yourself as if someone were watching because most likely, someone is.
