Requesting recommendations on LinkedIn can be awkward.

But if you’re on LinkedIn and you want to take advantage of this awesome resource, you want some recommendations!

Here are some of my own opinions and tips for recommendations:

  • If someone has offered to write you a letter of recommendation, ask them if they would include a short recommendation on LinkedIn as well.
  • Professional references? Perfect for LinkedIn recommendations!
  • Send requests sporadically. If all of your recommendations were posted in the same time frame, it looks like you sent a mass message to your connections and decreases the genuineness of the recommendation.
  • When requesting a recommendation, be sure to be specific about what this person will be recommending you on. If you did not work with them at the same company, they may be confused as to what you want them to recommend you on.
  • Remember the term “quality vs quantity”! The quality of your recommendations speaks volumes. If you have 3 well thought out and clearly genuine recommendations, it means more than having 50 one-liners saying how awesome you are as a person.

Any other good suggestions or opinions on LinkedIn recommendations?  Please share!
